Letter 4: COTTONWOOD, AZ DEADHORSE RANCH STATE PARK
From the Traveling Harrington’s.

Approaching Flagstaff.
Thursday, March 27, after finding a real campsite and moving into it from the “over flow” area of temporary sites, we took it easy and watched

the Gamble Quails scurry around the campsite.

Later in the morning we drove to Jerome (9miles from camp), then over the mountain and about 40 miles from camp to Prescott. The mountain pass to Prescott was very interesting and scenic. Lots of curves, switchbacks and drop offs, a narrow 2 lane roadway AND it is a state highway. The top of the pass was 7025. Our mileage from Waxahachie went over 2,000 miles just before Prescott.

Jerome is a very unique little town that started on the side of the mountain with a copper mine. When the copper mining played out, it became a ghost town. The population fell from about 10,000 to less than fifty in less than one year. Now it is being restored with lots of interesting little shops and restaurants as well as residences. See Jerome 1, 2, 3 & 4. When we arrived in Prescott, the 2nd largest city (about 175,000 in the area) since Waxahachie, we decided we were seeing too many cars & people. We felt the Prescott area was an unwanted preview of southern Arizona. So we were glad to return to our peaceful camp.

Most of New Mexico & Arizona reminds us of our trip to Rome with its unending churches. We have seen too many pictographs, desert, ruins, and rocks and we aren’t through. We still have the Grand Canyon, Bryce & Zion and Las Vegas to go! MORE desert! Then, at last, LA!
Friday, March 28, we drove to Sedona and visited its upscale shopping center named Talaquepaque,

This is a flower Olivia liked.

Then, we drove up

Oak Creek Canyon enjoying the beautiful creek, canyon and mountain views along the way.

Slide Rock SP pictures. Olivia even shopped at several roadside markets, buying a turquoise pendant at one stop. Once back at camp, we grilled chicken outside. We enjoyed a gourmet dinner with spaghetti squash and salad and tasty grilled chicken. This is the first place we have watched TV. Imagine that over two weeks without TV!! Fred enjoyed watching NCAA basketball game - Texas/Stanford. We move on Saturday to the Grand Canyon area. Page, Bryce and Zion Canyons follow Grand Canyon.
